The cartographical material is applied as a background (the raster image) in many kinds of the applications. Thus, the basic part of the information is perceived by the user visually. At the same time, some part of map objects is desirable for having in digital state (vector) for usage at the solution  the application tasks (problems). For example, for solution the transport tasks from all objects can be digitized the road network and occupied items. The preparation of the initial cartographical data for such tasks can be fulfilled in the short terms.

The aggregate of the raster and vector data joined in one work area, constructs a raster - vector map.

The raster - vector map has the same properties, as a vector map, namely:

- precise measurement of coordinates in any point of a map;

- scalability of the image;

- smooth moving (scrolling) of the map image;

- management the displayed data contents by a choice;

- management the displayed colors for a raster part of a map;

- output of an any image fragment to peripherals;

- association the separate raster sheets in raster - vector work area and correct joint display the overlapped sites of raster files without modification in their structure.

The last property means, that at creation the raster work area the cut rectangular fragment procedures, single whole association procedures etc. are not necessary.  Different map image fragments can be scanned under different corners.

The files containing the appropriate map image fragments, at association in work area do not vary. The correctness of their joint display is provided at the moment of their conclusion to the appropriate device (the display, the printer).

The application of raster - vector work areas provides reduction the time on creation a vector map and improvement quality of operations at the coordination of separate segments (layers) and the bring together the adjacent sheets.
