The task of «Built-up area generalization» increases the visibility of the image of built-up areas and their parts in accordance with the requirements of an output scale, significantly reducing the amount of manual operations and speeding up the process of creating an output map.,

Generalization of built-up areas is carried out in three main stages:

- processing of quarters;

- interactive analysis of quality of output map;

- processing of buildings.

In order to improve the visibility of the quarters image, small quarters are combined, and the width of passages is increased.

Processing of quarters is carried out in the following order:

- automated passages axises forming;

- interactive editing of passages axises;

- automated passages forming;

- interactive editing the passages and quarters;

- automated quarters forming (cutting, uniting), expansion of densely built-up parts of quarters;

- interactive expansion (creation) of quarters.

The analysis of quality of the output map is carried out on the basis of the error log (messages) received upon termination of automated quarters forming, in the dialog the Map Editor / View error.

Upon termination of quarters forming, for the purpose of improvement of presentation of buildings image the replacement of buildings by an off-scale conventional sign (densely built-up parts of quarter), and also selection (deleting) of buildings are carried out.

Processing of buildings is carried out in three stages:

- automated displacement of buildings;

- interactive creation of densely built-up parts of quarter;

- deleting of buildings which have been not expressed on the map scale.
